You can smell the "manure" in my business
Published: Wed, 01/29/14
always a perfume and makeup section right up front?
You are forced to walk through this section in any department
store, even if you are just there to buy a pair of black socks.
Why?
For starters, those are products with great profit margins.
If you can think of what it takes to manufacture a piece of
clothing and import it into the country, then get it into the
store, you can see why those would be high cost items.
The profits for the store are small.
Perfume, on the other hand, is scented liquid in a fancy bottle,
selling for far more than the cost of goods that are in it.
Nice profit margins.
A gent by the name of Harry Selfridge worked his way up a Chicago
department store corporate ladder in the late 1800s.
He married a rich gal, and then had some "walking around
money."
So, he went to London and opened a department store.
Ol' Harry didn't like the fact that because of all the
horse and carriage traffic in the streets of London, people came
into his store with horse manure on their shoes.
He didn't like that when the customer came into his store, they
were greeted by the smell of horse crap.
So, he killed two birds with one bottle, and moved the perfume
section to the entrance.
Now, every woman had to walk through the high profit center of his
store on their way in to just buy socks. Many stopped to squirt
some scent on themselves and buy a bottle.
And, the perfume masked the musky manure smell in the entrance.
Winna' winna', chicken dinner.
That's NOT the way I do business.
Nope.
I want you to see, smell, and (I dare you) touch the "horse
manure" of my business lines.
Let's start with my frac sand and barite testing business.
* I am not the flagship proppant lab in the US, and eventual buyers
of your frac sands may ask for test results from the flagship lab
(Stimlab). I also don't do conductivity testing.
* I don't have a staff of technicians and engineers that
scamper about, doing my bidding, while I sip a latte. I don't
have a cute assistant that calls you asking for your credit card
info.
The flip side:
** If you hire me to do your testing, I work closely with you and
do nearly all the testing myself (I hire a highly trained chemist
for acid and turbidity).
** We chat on the phone regularly about your sand and how it looks.
We strategize on additional samples and deposits to test, and what
tests to perform.
** If you have frac sand, I link you up with honest frac sand
marketing folks (if you want) to take your sand to the next step.
** My business is geared to the frac sand explorer who needs to
test multiple samples -- right now! -- on a budget, in order to
determine if and where they have their best sands.
Now, on to my expensive printed newsletter, Frac Sand Fortunes,
found here:
http://www.globalenergylaboratories.com/newsletters/
* It is expensive ($97 per month, at this time), but I repeat
repeat myself.
* It is not for those that sit back and are afraid to take action
on excellent how-to information.
The flip side:
** If you consider it an investment in yourself and your business,
it can have one heckuva rate of return. And it's probably tax
deductible, check with your advisor.
** Each issue has actionable, how-to, step-by-step info on how to
make it in the frac sand business, or other related businesses.
It's for do-ers.
** You hear recorded interviews from people you would probably have
never had the time or the opportunity to sit down and grill about
their business. Instead, I do the dirty work, and you get to
listen to or read the interview while smoking a big, fat, expensive
cigar!
Finally, my emerging business of frac sand valuation (yes, I can
perform a valuation of a frac sand deposit or mine).
* I don't have a huge staff of engineers and technical experts
at my command to storm onsite and measure your property and take
core samples and everything.
* I'm not an international mining consulting firm that can
print your valuation on expensive binders and thick parchment
paper, with a 90 year old crest on the letterhead.
The flip side:
** Working with me, I can put together a package of frac sand
testing AND valuation, in order to help you get both important
steps done quickly on a budget, because I know that testing alone
can mean a significant investment.
** I charge by "the project" (with testing included, if
you want), and with me you don't have hordes of engineers and
middle managers billing you by the hour for questionable tasks like
"project scoping meetings."
** You get a legitimate valuation of your frac sand deposits or
mine to literally "take to the bank" if you need to;
I'm a professional engineer, frac sand expert, and business
owner and understand the value of your deposit or mine.
**A good valuation of your sands can turn you into a millionaire
(on paper anyway!) almost overnight.
