My string of bad luck lately

Published: Tue, 02/18/14

This year I've decided to get into cross country skiing. There
is a well maintained system of trails just a few miles from my
house, and it's about time I took it up.

One of the problems has been getting equipment that works well for
me.

You see, cross country skis are spec'd based on your height and
weight.

The cross country ski is divided into thirds on the bottom. The
outer thirds are waxed with slippery wax, and the third in the
middle - right under your boot - has "scales" and takes a
sticky wax.

The idea is that as you put your weight down on one foot, you push
down on the "sticky" middle third of the ski, and you can
push and propel yourself forward on the slippery snow. You are
sliding forward on your other ski, as it has far less weight on it.

Then you move your arms with the poles, and help propel yourself
down the track.

Problem for me was that my first skis were too long, and I
wasn't quite heavy enough to push down enough to make the
middle "sticky" third contact the snow.

So, my wife bought me a new set of skis last week. Problem was,
those skis didn't fit the boots that I had.

I thought I would be able to rent boots at the lodge, but found out
that they didn't have boots that fit my new type of ski.

So, I had to rent skis and boots on Sunday when we were skiing.

Note to self - check boots and ski specs before buying to make sure
that everything is compatible!

In other bad luck, my e-mail server went down for a day.
Everything is "hunky-dory" now, but if you e-mailed me in
the last couple of days it was probably rejected or didn't get
to me.

However, you -- my friend -- are definitely IN luck.
